I’m Not That Guy
Somebody hurt you
It was not I
You left so quickly
I could just cry
Somebody hurt you
I’m not that guy
Let's talk a minute
Let me say goodbye
For forty six years we were husband and wife.
We loved and danced through a wonderful life.
But your memories grew fainter in these last years
And now I'm the object of your earliest fears.
*
I watched you return to a shy teenage flame.
I was sure you would call me by your first husband’s name.
It wasn’t his memory that took you away.
But some evil man who raped you that day.
*
I hadn’t yet met you when you were that young.
The pervert that hurt you should have been hung.
You’ve told me you hate me and will kill me someday.
You think I’m the one who hurt you that way.
Somebody hurt you
It was not I
You left so quickly
I could just cry
Somebody hurt you
I’m not that guy
Let's talk a minute
Let's talk a minute
Let me say goodbye
besides the tears in my eyes, and the solemn feeling, I think it is a classic poem. and yes, a Merle Haggard type song...
ReplyDeleteWell said Don, people hide things that happened & many times it comes out like this, a good post Walt. Saddest thing ever our tears flow too, while u know, we know, she knows & the Lord knows what's been. We don't always get to say goodbye. ...know that she has all your time with her in her heart. Yes a forever song.

ReplyDeleteHeartbreakingly beautiful. Beauty and pain braiding together across the canyons of time- now, unraveling. I am heart broken with and for you. For what it is worth, you did express yourself brilliantly.
